Join award-winning photographer, Julia Cumes, as she shares powerful images and personal stories from the frontlines of climate change. Explore the human, animal and environmental toll of events like Hurricane Katrina, Cape Town's Water Crisis, California's Wildfires, Hurricane Ida, and Kentucky's catastrophic floods. This talk will highlight the resilience of affected communities, address sustainable food production and the urgent need for action through the evocative power of photography.
Bio:
Julia Cumes is an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in the Boston Globe, New York Times, and other national and regional publications. With a passion for storytelling and capturing human connection, Julia has documented some of the most dramatic climate-related events of our time, including Hurricane Katrina, Cape Town's Water Crisis, California's Wildfires, Hurricane Ida, and Kentucky's catastrophic floods. Growing up in Apartheid-era South Africa, Julia understood early on the power of photography to reveal truth, evoke empathy, and catalyze change. Through evocative images and compelling narratives, she aims to engage audiences in a dialogue about the urgent issue of climate change and the resilience of affected communities. Most recently, Julia was chosen as the "2024 Artist of the Year" by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
